After a wonderful week at Falcon Cabin, we drove back to Calgary on Sunday, July 19 to attend a family barbeque at Doug and Jeri Lynne’s. We had a delicious dinner of barbequed ribs, chicken, baked beans and an array of salad’s. It was a great opportunity to have everyone together and get some family photos done. On Monday, Paige and I took the dogs for a nice walk and then picked up some groceries for our last dinner. We made another delicious salad and put some salmon and halibut on the barbie. We enjoyed dinner and played some crib before getting the bags packed for our early morning flight to Austin which would be the last leg of our summer vacation.
Our flight connected through Houston and arrived in Austin just after 2:00pm. We grabbed our rental car and made our way to The Barrett’s. They also had some friends visiting from California so it would be a full house. We arrived and the ladies were out back having a float in the pool so we joined them for an afternoon swim. Soon the kids arrived and Tim got home from work. That evening we had a delicious Mexican feast and enjoyed a couple of cerveza’s out back on the patio.
A few days before we arrived, the Barrett’s and their company had taken a float down the Comal River. They had such a great time they decided we also had to experience it! We got a cooler filled with some beer and coolers and drove down to the river (alcoholic beverages are legal and you can drink while you Tube). We rented our tubes and were soon floating down the river. There are a couple of “rapids” but once we passed those I could relax and float. It took approximately 3 hours to float the river. It was a beautiful day and a great way to spend the afternoon.
The next day, Dan and I took a drive over to the mall to do a bit of shopping. We spent a couple of hours there and then took a drive to find Barton Springs, a set of four natural springs located on the grounds of Zilker Park. Unfortunately we didn’t have our swimmers with us so we couldn’t go for a dip but it looked like a lovely place to escape the heat. That evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner of vegetable risotto and beer can chicken back at the house.
The next morning we were on the road to Dallas. We stopped for lunch along the way at Rudy’s, famous for their BBQ brisket. We decided to share the ½ lb. of moist brisket with a side of potato salad and beans. A perfect last meal to have in Texas. We made it to the airport and soon enough were boarding our 15 hour flight back to Abu Dhabi. Austin was a great way to end the last days of our summer vaca’.
