My sister Paige arrived in Abu Dhabi on the evening of February 4th after spending a night in Toronto visiting a friend. She would be spending 9 nights with us before her and I would fly together to London, England for her birthday. On Thursday night after work, we played a few rounds of bowling before heading to bed early in preparation for our trip up to Dubai. The next morning, we woke up early to watch the camel races at the Al Watba track. Racing camels used to be ridden by children but this practice has since been outlawed. Robotic jockeys have now taken over. The operators follow the race in 4WDs while directing the jockeys by remote control. This was a first for us and was a real cultural experience.
After the morning races, we made our way to the Dubai aquarium and underwater zoo where we saw the “King Croc”, one of the largest crocodiles in the world weighing in at 750 kgs. We spent a couple of hours in the zoo and then went to see the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa. We watched the fountain water show, had lunch, and then drove out to Palm Island before heading back to Abu Dhabi.
The next day, we went bike riding on the Corniche in the morning and then the girls went for massages at Talise Spa. We had friends over for dinner that evening – a nice way to end the weekend. That week, we went bike riding again on the Yas Marina F1 circuit and we also had friends over for a nice dinner. Paige and I had taken over the kitchen to make a delicious salad.
On our last night, we splurged and went to the Vox Gold Cinema at Yas Mall to see the newly released Kingsman: The Secret Service. The thing about “Gold” is that you get your own fully reclining arm chair, blanket, pillow and waiter service where you can order food and drinks. It’s really the best way to enjoy a movie. Afterwards, we came back to the apartment before heading up to the airport for our 2:35 am flight to London, England on the A380. It was great to have Paige visit us at our overseas home and see a glimpse of our lives in Abu Dhabi.
