Keeping it weird in Austin

This Christmas we made a detour on our way home via Texas to visit my cousin and her family. On the morning of Friday, December 19 we boarded our 16 hr 40 mn flight to Dallas. We arrived around 6:00pm that evening, picked up our rental car and hit the highway towards Austin. We finally made it in around 10:00pm after stopping at Whataburger for some dinner – opting for the classic American cheeseburger and French fries. We said hello to the boys and enjoyed some wine with Tim and JoAnna before heading to bed for a much needed rest. The next morning we were up early (thank you jet lag) and lounged around for a bit before heading into Austin for the day. Our first stop was for breakfast taco’s at a roadside taco stand.

After our spicy breakfast, we drove around Austin for a bit and stopped in at the Capitol Hill building where the boys gave us a tour. Then we drove down the famous 6th Street, walked up South Congress Avenue, and then stopped for lunch at Torchy’s tacos.

We hung out back at the house before heading out for dinner at The Salt Lick B.B.Q. Funnily enough, we had watched a Christmas movie before we left called Angels Sing which featured this famous restaurant. We ordered the combo plate with beef brisket, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw and beans.

The next day was Sunday, or should we call it Football Sunday. In the morning we had a great breakfast in and watched some NFL football. (JoAnna’s team just won the Super Bowl). That evening, we drove back into Austin to try out the famous burgers at Hopdoddy Burger Bar, which was lined up all the way around the corner. So we ordered a cocktail while we waited and finally made our way inside. I ordered the Classic and Dan went with the El Diablo and we shared the truffle french fries. We drove back to the house and relaxed before heading to bed as we had to get on the road at 4:30am to make our flight from Dallas to Calgary. We had a great time catching up with my cousin and the family and look forward to seeing them again soon.

About rrettenmier

In September 2010, Dan and I received working visas for the United Kingdom. We sold our condo, quit our jobs and packed our bags to move to London. This blog (though a few months late) is designed to update our friends and family back home about where we are and what we are up to.
