A few weeks after my work trip to London, my friend Jen and her friend Shazar flew to Abu Dhabi for a short break. Jen and Shazar are both from Canada but moved to London a few years ago where they met. They arrived late on Wednesday, October 26th however they didn’t have much sleep as the next morning they were up bright and early to go on their morning desert safari. They went dune bashing, rode a camel and then were back in the early afternoon. After work, we took the girls over to the Emirates Palace Hotel where we enjoyed a mojito before having dinner at Hakassan. After dinner, we popped up to Ray’s Bar for a night cap. We ended up bumping into some friends and enjoyed a few more cocktails before the night was through.
The next morning we slept in a little, and then made our way up to the three bridges area to have Friday Brunch. Friday Brunch is a bit of an institution in Abu Dhabi where many hotels offer an all inclusive drinks and food buffet. We decided to have ours at Pearls and Caviar, specializing in seafood and over looking the waterfront. Afterwards we took a stroll through the Souk Qaryat Al Beri before watching the sunset.
On Saturday we went on a driving tour of Abu Dhabi. We took a stroll along Yas Marina, checked out the F1 track and then made our way to Manarat Al Saadiyat, an arts and culture centre. On the way back home, Dan dropped us on the Corniche where we grabbed a lemon and mint beverage at a spot on the beach. We walked back to the apartment where Dan was busy getting dinner ready. That evening we had “Canadian Night” with Caesar’s to start, steak and twice baked potatoes and some Canadian wine for dinner. We taught Shazar the cribbage basics, had a few crib matches and then played a few rounds of our all time favourite game, Catch Phrase.
The next day Dan had to work and I took it off to spend the last day with the girls. We hit up the new Nation Riviera Beach Club and spent the morning lounging by the pool. We had a bite of lunch on the beach and then walked over to the spa for our afternoon massage appointments. It was a nice and relaxing way to end the long weekend. That evening we thought it was due time to have some Arabic food, so we ordered in from the local favourite, Lebanese Flower. It was the girls last dinner in Abu Dhabi and we invited our friends Jenn & Spence to join us. The next morning, Jen and Shazar visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque before heading up to the airport for their afternoon flight back to London. It was really great to have some Canadian friends come and visit us in Abu Dhabi! We hope they make it back real soon.
