Sunday, June 17th was a UAE religious holiday for Israa & Mairaj Night. This holiday marks when the Islamic prophet Muhammad took a night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem in the year 621. Dates for religious holidays are dependent on the sighting of the moon and may differ from the original estimated date.
On Thursday night, we went to the Royal Meridien Hotel to check out PJ O’Reilly’s Irish Pub for a pint. Then, we went to Trader Vic’s, a Polynesian restaurant, for dinner. On Friday, I met up with a girl named Angela. She was introduced to me by my friend Enza who met her at a conference in Calgary. We met at the Marina Mall for lunch and then checked out the cinema. That evening Dan and I went to watch the Ukraine vs. Sweden game at the Brauhaus in the Beach Rotana Resort.
Saturday morning, we decided to grab breaky at Jones The Grocer and then hit the beach for our first time. We paid 10 Emirati Dirham’s to access the beach and 25 more for beach chairs/umbrella. It was a hot day, with little breeze, but wasn’t as humid as other days. It was like swimming in bath water and the air temperature was approximately between 41-44 degrees. We weren’t liberal enough with the sunscreen and ended up with a bad sunburn.
That night, we decided to go for a good beer and made our way to the Belgian Cafe in the InterContinental Hotel. We both decided which beers to order but found out that due to the holiday, alcohol was not served. So, instead we had a pot of mussels and frites. You might wonder why we keep going to hotels. The hotels contain most of the restaurants and bars in Abu Dhabi that are licenced to serve alcohol. This makes the hotels popular with the tourists as well as the expats.
Sunday we were both still pretty burnt so we wanted to mainly stay indoors. We toured around the Abu Dhabi Mall and then I hit up the Nail It Salon for a mani/pedi before starting the new job tomorrow. Hope everyone had a good weekend back home and Happy Father’s Day.
