Time at Home

I arrived in Canada on Sunday, April 1st.  Rebecca had arrived about 10 days earlier and had already flown to meet her sister, Paige, in Guelph.  Paige was moving home after a year of university so they packed up Paige’s car and drove home.  They made stops in Chicago and Mount Rushmore on the way.

As most of you know, I accepted a position with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.  Rebecca soon began searching for a job in Abu Dhabi and on April 2th, she flew to Abu Dhabi to interview for an Internal Auditor role with Etihad Airways.  They offered her the job about a week later.  We were expecting to be home for about 2 weeks before moving to Abu Dhabi, but it turned out to be 2 months.  This allowed us the time to see so many friends and family.

We had arrived back in time for our nephew’s 2nd birthday.  Scott and Jenelle threw him a nice party at their new house they just built.  He is turning into quite a little guy.  He likes to play hockey, basketball, and has a great sense of humor.

I went to a Calgary vs. Vancouver hockey game, golfed, and got my friend, Kyle, set up in his new place.  I also did a lot of biking with my mom’s dog, Buddy.  We also had so many nice dinners with our friends and family.  We went out to Cochrane to see Mark and Megan and also made a couple trips to see Kim in Sylvan Lake and Kevin in Red Deer.  We enjoyed playing crib with Rebecca’s father and grandmother.

On Monday, May 7th, Rebecca and I drove out to Lake Louise on the old 1A highway.  We stayed the night in a really nice log cabin at a place called Baker Creek Resort.  That day, we hiked up to the falls in Johnston Canyon.  As we pulled in to the resort, we spotted a Grizzly bear and it came right up to the car.  Later, we went to the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel, walked by the lake, and had a drink in the hotel.  It was a nice getaway.

On May Long Weekend, we drove out to Admiral, Saskatchewan where Rebecca’s aunt and uncle live on the family farm.  I helped Uncle Garry with some fencing and rode the ATV.  We also watched Chelsea beat Munich Bayern to win the Champions League.  It is very relaxing on the farm.

On Friday, May 25th, we invited some friends and family to the Wurst Beer Hall in Calgary.  It was nice to see everyone so I could say goodbye.  I flew to Abu Dhabi the next day.  For those of you that are interested, it’s a 13 hour flight from Toronto to Abu Dhabi.  Rebecca should be joining me soon.

This past weekend, Rebecca flew to Vancouver to visit her friend, Jami.  Uncle Steve and Auntie Susan picked her up at the airport and they got a chance to visit.  Rebecca and Jami ordered in sushi then went out to meet up with some of Jami’s friends.  Rebecca’s friend, Jen, is also back in Calgary for the weekend and they hope to meet up early this week.

It was so nice to be home.  Thanks to everyone who fed us, lent us their car, and allowed us to stay with them (especially our moms!).  We’re going to miss you.
