After returning home from Rome on Sunday afternoon, we got a message from Uncle Steve that someone from Vancouver was trying to get in touch with him regarding Grandpa.  Mom and I phoned the George Derby Centre in Burnaby and were told that Grandpa had passed away in his sleep that morning.  Although Grandpa was 93, it was very sudden and devastating news as he had been in good health.

Uncle Steve and Auntie Sue decided to end their tour of Southern Albania early, cancel their Cypress plans and return to Vancouver as soon as possible.  Mom wanted to go with them.  On Tuesday morning, Steve, Sue and Mom were on the Lufthansa flight back to Vancouver.

Grandpa will surely be  missed by all that knew him.  I have so many wonderful memories of the time we spent together on Salt Spring Island growing up and later in Burnaby.  He taught my brothers and I some valuable lessons like working hard on your studies, standing up when a lady enters the room, and keeping good posture (chin up and shoulders back)!  I also admired the love he had for his wife of 63 years, Mildred, who passed away in 2005.  I don’t think a day went by that he didn’t think of her.

We are going to miss you Grandpa!

Cheers Grandpa

Very sorry to hear about Grandpa Dan. I know how much he was loved and will be greatly missed. I only met Grandpa on a few occassions and he touched my heart in that short time so I can only imagine how he touched yours in your life time. Take comfort in all of the wonderful memories that you have of Grandpa. Thoughts and love to your family.
