Last weekend, August 5th, we decided to head to a beachfront hotel south of Vlora to celebrate our belated 2nd anniversary since I was away in India for the special day. We spent two nights at Hotel Nimfa, a short 15 minute drive away, but we were amazed at the crystal clear blue water there. We arrived on Friday night after Dan got off work and we had a nice seafood dinner at the hotel restaurant. Dan ordered a seafood pasta dish that ended up including a whole fish! The next morning we hit the beach chairs at 9:00 and by 10:00 the little cove was full. It was a nice 31 degrees and, I hate to admit it, but I went for my first real swim since being here. They also built a diving platform off one of the large rocks there and Dan went for a couple of dives.
That night we popped a bottle of Sula Brut that I brought back from the Indian Winery we went to as well as a bottle of Ripassa from our wedding that Dan lugged over here. We also exchanged our traditional 2nd anniversary “cotton” presents. Dan got me 2 nice cotton shirts and I gave him a cotton bedspread from Udaipur, India.
The next morning we checked out of our room and hit the beach. This time the beach was already full so we just had to lay our towels down on the rocky beach. We hung out there until 1:00 and were planning on getting a taxi back to Vlore but the driver wouldn’t come get us because traffic was backed up for 2 hours! We decided to take our chances and waited to see if we could hail a taxi and luckily enough one came by and picked us up. It took us 45 minutes to get back into town, thrice the regular time.
That evening we had dinner plans with our landlord Artan, his wife, daughter and their family friends. In true Albanian fashion, the ladies had put on an extravagant feast – seafood pasta, seafood risotto, fish, shrimp, calamari, 2 salads, cheese byrek, ham & melon, mixed fruits and 3 desserts. I wish I had my camera to take some pics! All in all it was a wonderful first weekend back in Albania.
