Start of Summer Festival – May 14th, 2011

Unbeknownst to us, the weekend after Doug left there was a festival in Vlora to celebrate the start of summer. We were starting to wonder whether people sported shorts here or not but it seems everyone was just waiting till the start of summer festivals were here. It was a beautiful weekend and they had an international dance competition, paragliding competition, and Brazilian live music show. In the morning we walked down to the Plazh i ri(new beach). We watched the traditional dancers from Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Kosovo and Poland.

Then we watched some of the paragliders trying to land on the beach. The beach was packed and everyone was out swimming. On Sunday night we walked into town to watch the Brazilian band and dance show. We were sorry that Doug only missed it by one weekend.

This weekend we are having an Open House at our place. We have invited some people we know from Dan’s work as well as some people we have met in the neighbourhood like Sotir, the Greek chef at the local restaurant downstairs, as well as the brothers from Bar Hanover where I get my daily macchiato. We have asked Sotir to whip up some appies for us and we are going to serve some local meats, cheeses, veggies, etc. We hope to get a good turnout!

About rrettenmier

In September 2010, Dan and I received working visas for the United Kingdom. We sold our condo, quit our jobs and packed our bags to move to London. This blog (though a few months late) is designed to update our friends and family back home about where we are and what we are up to.
